There are two ways for Jedi to advance in their powers;
When a Jedi kills another Jedi, total up the Force Skill dice and "pips" (each +3 pips = 1D) of both Jedi, and then consult the following table;
Attacker Beats Defender | Defender Beats Attacker | ||||
---|---|---|---|---|---|
5D or more | 4D+2 to 1D+1 | 1D to 1D | 1D+1 to 4D+2 | 5D or more | |
Attacker Gains | +0 | +1 | +1D | +2D | +3D |
The result is how many Dice the attacker recieves to distribute between his Force skills. The time taken for the increases to occur varies, so a general rule is that they gain the dice after meditating for at least an hour afterwards. If the Jedi doesn't meditate within six hours of killing the Jedi, then the dice gained are lost as the energies gained from the deceased Jedi fade away!
Example: Darrin kills Berroll in lightsaber combat;
Darrin has
Control 3D+2, Sense 3D+1, & Alter 1D+1, for a total of 7D+1.
Berrol had Control 3D+1, Sense 2D+1, & Alter 1D, for a total of 6D+2.
Darrin's total is 1D+2 greater than Berroll's, so Darrin recieves +1 to assign to his Force Skills.
"Dark" Jedi embrace the "advancement through killing" path due to the fact that it is an "easier" method, and this enforces their philosophy that says that this path of advancement is the only true way for a Jedi to advance in power.
"Light" Jedi, on the other hand, believe that advancement should happen through teaching and learning (an altogether slower process than the advancement through killing).
This is where the conflict between the "Light" and "Dark" Jedi springs from, and since the Republic views the "Dark" Jedi's philosophy as evil; they are portrayed as such, while the "Light" Jedi are portrayed as saviours to do battle against the "Dark" Jedi and their allies.
The only reason that the Republic is so against the "Dark" Jedi is all due to the actions of one "Light" Jedi, who approached the Republic in it's early years and convinced them to help him in the "Light" Jedi's fight against the "Dark" Jedi. The Republic agreed to help the "Light" Jedi to fight its battles, as long as the "Light" Jedi's aid the Republic in its problems.
It has come to my attention that the difficulty numbers presented in Star Wars RPG are a little on the hard side... an average difficulty being 15, while an average character only has 3D in a skill...
I have come up with a new difficulty scale, which is as follows;
